Egypt possesses a key role in regional and global energy markets. This is most likely attributed to its geographical proximity and strategic location at the crossroad of international trade of oil and gas, in addition to the control of two major transit routes: the Suez Canal and the Suez-Mediterranean Pipeline (SUMED).

Egypt possesses an abundance of land, sunny weather and high wind speed, making it a prime resource for three renewable energy sources: wind, solar and biomass.

Egypt’s Solar Atlas states that Egypt is considered a “sun belt” country with 2,000 to 3,000 kWh/m2/year of direct solar radiation. The sun shines 9-11 hours a day from North to South in Egypt, with few cloudy days.

Installed Solar Power in Egypt:

  • 20 MW in Karimat      – 2011

  • 10 MW in Siwa          – 2015

  • 800 MW in Benban  – 2018   (37 Km2) 1.6 GW in 2022

In 2035, Egypt plans for above 40% of the energy market to be supplied by renewable energies. Solar energy to be the predominant market with 25%

Egyptian Energy Education Home [EEEH]

Egypt put some goals for the Sustainable Development Strategy 2030 (SDS Goals):

  • Affordable & clean energy

  • Sustainable cities & communities

  • Decent work and economic growth

  • No poverty

Where, the firts two goals can be only assured by using renewable energy to promote new and clean communities. The main problem is there is not enough qualified people to work in this new field in Egypt!!

The Vocational Traininh Set-Up:

  • Title: Egyptian Energy Education Home (EEEH)

  •  Partner: Zeitoun’s Virgin Coptic Orthodox Foundation for Welfare and Development (ZVF)

  •  Period: 3 years in two phases (18 months each), further steps also planned

  •  Target:

  • 450 trainees (20% young engineers & 80% technicians)

  • Implementing 8 solar power plants ( 5 kWp each) in schools/institutes/churches/hospitals

  • Contact with companies to help trainees finding jobs

  • 800 persons through awareness sessions (students, engineers, technicians, public)

  • 500 persons indirectly via discussions with target groups with friends, families, & beneficiaries from the solar units

  • Development: working on local applications based solar energy (i.e. charging stations for e-bikes, auto Garage,…)

Project Phases

Phase 1A (9 months)

  • ToT from certified trainer for 8 selected engineers

  • Administration staff

  • Create different teams (instructor, operation, marketing, procurement, laboratory

  • 180 trainees in 12 groups – 48 hours each (engineers, students, technicians)

  • Implementing 4 units (5 kW each)

  • Establishing a lab with the needed tools

  • 4 awareness workshops in schools and universities

    • Teams: Marketing: networking & communication & media

    • Instructors: theoretical & practical training

    • Operation :Design, execute, quality, safety for solar power units

    • Procurement: database, specifications, prices, suppliers, companies,….

    • Laboratory   : electronics, embedded systems, solar applications, ….

Phase 1B (9 months)

  •  270 trainees (solar energy, electronics, soft skills)

  •  Implementing 4 units (5 kW each) outside Cairo

  •  4 awareness workshops in schools and universities (outside Cairo)

  •  Emerging new applications to the lab: automatic transfer switch, battery chargers, street lamps, …

  •  Communicating with companies and governmental institutions for support and cooperation

Phase 2:

  •  Continue training in Cairo and start other governates (Minya, Fayoum, Alexanderia, Menofia,…)

  •  Implementing some small projects with companies using our trainees

  •  Feasibility studies for assembly factories, start-ups for new solar-based applications, …

Required Budget: for Phase 1A&B: 450.000 €, in Phase 2 support from companies and public institutions in Egypt is expected.
